Guest Room Updates Part I :: Design on a Budget

‘Tis the season for visitors – at least in my house. I’ve already been scrambling for ways to cozy up our downstairs bedroom in preparation for the in-laws come Christmas! Rugs, throws, you know the drill. Well, last month we made over my design partner Sara’s guest room in her new home as she hosts her parents quite a bit, and we decided it would make for our favorite kind of post: Before & After!

Here’s the twist though. We’re doing this two ways. One on a budget and one with a splurge! Today we’re tackling the budget-friendly, fast way to make guests feel a little more cozy in their temporary quarters.

The headboard is homemade (I have DIY envy!) and the nightstands a great option from Target. The task lights are from Ikea, and were already in the house so they came upstairs. Bedside lighting is a must for me – you want guests to be able to tuck in and read at night!

That took care of the majority of the big items, except one major piece… the mattress!

We teamed up with OSO mattress on this, a great option for any bedroom, but especially guest rooms because…

One side is firm and the other soft! So, depending on your guests’ preferences, you can simply turn the mattress around to accommodate their happy place. Bonus points for it being made in America! The latex layer is naturally hypoallergenic, dust-mite resistant, and free of harmful chemical emissions. The foam is free of heavy metals, formaldehydes, VOCs, and without dangerous off-gassing. Which means it makes for a healthy, happy resting place.

You know what came next… LAYERS. Linens are where I tend to splurge a bit, but here we did a mix of high and low! Sara chose to splurge on the entire dot set from Schoolhouse, but a more budget-friendly way dress the bed would using a basic white set, then adding a bit of pattern with just the pillowcases. Want to go full pattern with the sheets? Try these!

A thinly striped linen duvet adds another layer of soft pattern, then a heavier quilt tops things off. Sara was lucky enough to find this throw at a yard sale! Really, any throw or quilt of your choice will do. I like to go with heavier ones in the winter!

The final touch? A simple sisal rug at the foot of the bed. So, to recap:

  • The most important piece of the room is the mattress – you want your guests to have a good night’s sleep!
  • If you’re on a budget, skimp on the furniture – to a certain extent. These pieces are not getting everyday use so they will give you good bang for your buck without having to invest, in the short term.
  • To create a cozy environment, add layers and patterns. A little splurge on sheets or a linen duvet cover is a nice touch and makes guests feel like they’re getting the luxury treatment.

If you’re a really amazing host, purchasing a couple pairs of house slippers on the cheap for guests to slide into is one of my favorite touches for a guest room!

Now, this is a great space as it is, but if you happen to have a little more time and budget, in tomorrow’s post we step things up a notch to create an entirely different look in this room! Think more long-term design pieces and heavenly neutrals… I can’t wait to share!
